v2.3.1

Oct 2026

Latest

A new way around Tala on phones, and a round of keyboard and screen-reader fixes for the web and desktop apps.

Changed

  • Phone navigation: the bottom bar is now Today, Plan, Write, Notes and Search. Plan is a new list of Upcoming, Tasks, Money, Habits and Workouts, each row saying where that view stands ("2 of 4 done today", "Dentist · Fri, Oct 30 2pm"). A planner view has a "‹ Plan" back link, or "‹ Today" when a Today tile opened it, in place of the pill strip (tablets keep the strip).
  • The gold Write button now carries a label. On Today it puts the cursor in the box; elsewhere it opens the capture sheet. The active tab has a pill behind its icon as well as its colour.
  • New note is the green plus in the Notes header, and the profile menu (Settings, Quiet mode, Back up now) sits in each header, both with 44 px targets.
  • Money and Today say "₱150 spent today" when there is no income or balance to spread yet, instead of "over today's share".

Fixed

  • Keyboard users can press Tab once and choose "Skip to content" instead of tabbing through the whole sidebar.
  • Every layout has one main landmark (the editor when a note is open) and the side panes are labelled, so screen readers can jump to the page.
  • The note list heading reads "All Notes 3", not "All Notes3".
  • Money's category buttons reach the 24 px minimum target size.
  • A console warning about a duplicate underline extension in the editor is gone.

v2.3.0

Oct 2026

Today now reads like a conversation: write a line and Bituin answers it with what she filed.

Added

  • Bituin replies to each line on Today: your line is a green bubble on the right, and under it Bituin says what was filed plus one fact from the day, such as food so far, "water 5 of 8" or a new PR. The replies are plain rules over what you wrote, computed on your device.
  • Four tiles sum up the day: Next up, Money, Habits and To do. Each acts in place (tick a to-do, check a habit) and its header opens the full view. They swipe in a row on narrow screens and stack beside the thread on wide ones.

Changed

  • The capture box now sits docked at the foot of Today and writes without a "Saved" toast, since the line appears right above it.

v2.2.0

Oct 2026

Tala now organizes your day as well as your notes: type a line ("lunch 150", "bench 40kg 3x10", "dentist fri 2pm") and it is filed under Money, Workouts, Habits or Upcoming. No forms, no categories to pick, and it all runs on your device.

Added

  • Isip, one box for your day: the gold Write button (on the sidebar, and the centre of the phone's tab bar), Ctrl/⌘ Shift Space, or the installed app's "Write a line" shortcut opens it from anywhere. Enter saves; a pasted list saves one line each. Lines are kept apart from your notes.
  • Tala reads plain lines: spending ("kape 120", "lunch sa jollibee 189", "grocery 1,240 — eggs 98, milk 115"), income ("sweldo 8000"), transfers ("gcash to cash 500"), lifts ("bench 40kg 3x10", "pull ups bw x 10"), habits ("water 3", "nag-gym"), plans ("dentist fri 2pm") and reminders ("remind me to call mom fri"). English and Taglish dates; "kahapon" files the line under yesterday. The marker forms (P150, @ fri 2pm, ✓ water) still work.
  • Undo anything Tala read: each line shows what Tala took from it as chips. Tap × to stop counting one; an unsure reading asks "confirm?" and counts only once you say so. Tapping a chip corrects the category, place or exercise name for next time, without changing your line.
  • Today: what is planned today, the day's lines (edit, move to another day, delete with Undo, ‹ › between days), habits still to do, safe to spend, open tasks and the notes to pick up again.
  • Upcoming: the next two weeks of plans, classes (MWF 9-10:30 Calc), repeats (every 15th, tuwing kinsenas at katapusan), dated checklist items from your notes ("[ ] essay due fri", which keeps meaning that Friday), and things due again (every ~6w). Skip or mark done in one tap. Reminders fire while Tala is open.
  • Money: balances per account (Cash, GCash, Maya, Bank, or your own), the month by category with Food split into groceries, eating out, coffee/snacks and delivery, and safe to spend today, counted to your next income and after the bills due before it.
  • Habits: tick by writing; strength that a missed day only dents, days off, habits kept a few days a week, and Study (from your writing time) as the first habit. A ✓ name you have not set up yet shows up with a one-tap Keep.
  • Workouts: every exercise with its last session and best estimated 1RM, PRs and "last time" on each lift, a rest timer, and a Strong-compatible CSV export.
  • Insights, from plain counting: your usual split per weekday, top weight per week, groceries vs eating out vs delivery, costs that come back (Plan it adds them as a bill), grocery price changes, and food spending on gym days. Bituin mentions each insight once; Quiet mode silences it.
  • Learns what you usually write: the box suggests your own lines as you type, and lines you write most days are one tap away under "Again". Only your own earlier lines are offered, and only on this device.
  • Search and the command palette find your Isip lines too.

Changed

  • The gold button is now Write; New note sits beside it on the sidebar and is a tab on phones. The phone tab bar is Notes, Today, Write, New, Search and You; Today leads to Upcoming, Tasks, Money, Habits and Workouts.
  • On tablet and desktop the planner views take the whole pane until you open a note from one.
  • Shorter first run: no profile-picture step, and the name is optional.
  • New share image and README banner in the app's colours, and a new site title and description: "Tala — write it once, find it organized".
  • Database schema v6 (adds the Isip lines; additive and tested). Backups carry your lines, accounts, habits and corrections. After this version opens your library, an older version of Tala can no longer open it.

v2.1.0

Oct 2026

Bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements.

Added

  • Continuous scroll: a note's pages stack in one scroll instead of showing one at a time, and a note reopens on the page you last had in view (per device).
  • Insert pages in between: a "+" between pages and after the last, plus "Insert page before/after" in the page menu. A new page copies the size and template of the page above it.
  • Resizable sidebar and note list: drag the handle, or focus it and use the arrow keys, Home/End; double-click resets. Dragging the sidebar narrow enough closes it and keeps its width for reopening.

Changed

  • Home, Tasks and Settings each have a sidebar toggle in their header, so a hidden sidebar is always one tap away (including on a tablet held upright).
  • Undo and redo cover the whole note across its pages.
  • Only one formatting toolbar is on screen: the page you are typing in, or else the page in view.
  • Larger touch targets for Type/Write, the zoom percentage, and the folder and tag controls under the title.
  • Each page's handwriting area is announced to screen readers as "Handwriting on page N", and the resize handles have a clearer keyboard focus ring.

Fixed

  • Apple Pencil strokes on iPad could stop short when iPadOS took the drag for Scribble, text selection, the magnifier or scrolling.
  • Long notes use less canvas memory on iPad, which could blank pages.
  • Typed text is saved when its page scrolls out of view.

v2.0.0

Oct 2026

Tala is rebuilt as a stylus-first, local-first notebook that installs as a web app (iPad Safari, Android Chrome) and still ships as a Windows desktop app. It continues from 1.0.0, not from 1.1.0: the 1.1.0 line was not carried forward (see "Not carried over" below).

Added

  • Pages: a note is an ordered list of pages; each page owns its typed text and its handwriting.
  • PDF import and markup: the original PDF is kept and pages render on demand, also offline. Export annotated PDF draws ink as vectors over the original pages.
  • Pinch zoom and pan, an opaque pen that paints wet ink with no lag, a free-form lasso (recolour, duplicate), and a page strip with thumbnails and drag reordering. Undo survives page switches.
  • Snap to shape: rest the pen at the end of a stroke and a line, circle/ellipse, rectangle or triangle replaces it.
  • Lecture audio: record while you write. Audio is saved in 5-second chunks so a crash loses almost nothing, a Wake Lock keeps the screen on, and tapping a stroke made while recording plays the audio from just before it.
  • Bituin, the star mascot and rule-based study coach: a corner chip after the pen rests, a weekly goal that never resets progress, session wrap-ups, resurfacing of old notes, and a Quiet mode.
  • Tasks view: tick tasks across the whole library.
  • Phone layout: Notes / Tasks / New / Search / profile tab bar, 44 px touch targets, left-handed mirroring.
  • Data safety: persistent-storage request, Add-to-Home-Screen guide, weekly backup nudge, share-sheet backup on phones and tablets, and a copy of a pre-upgrade library kept in a separate database.
  • `.tala` backups (zip with manifest.json, backup.json and blobs). Legacy .json backups from versions 1–3 still import. Backups carry lecture rows and study days but not audio; each lecture has its own "Save audio".
  • Experimental, off by default: handwriting search using the browser's built-in recogniser (ChromeOS and some Android; not iPad Safari).
  • New app icon (star with pencil, pencil on the left) for web, iOS, Android and desktop.
  • First-run onboarding and start screens: a two-column welcome on tablet and desktop, three tips at the end of setup, a start list (New note, Import a PDF, Add a folder) when the library is empty, and "Pick up where you left off" when it is not.
  • Week constellation in the sidebar: one star per study day this week, joined as the week fills. Missing a day costs nothing.
  • Catalogue numbers (№ 001, № 002, …) on every note, and note lists grouped by day (Pinned, Today, Yesterday, This week, Earlier).
  • Home shows the tasks still open across notes; tick them there or jump to the note.
  • Profile menu in the sidebar (edit profile, change picture, Quiet mode, back up now) with the last backup time.
  • Search-engine and social-sharing metadata, robots.txt, sitemap.xml and a share image for tala.lorenzmalabanan.com.

Changed

  • New look, built for tablet and desktop first: colours taken from the app icon (forest-green sidebar, star-yellow New note, white pages on a light green dotted ground, dark mode to match), one typeface (Hanken Grotesk) instead of handwriting fonts, and plain line icons instead of doodles.
  • Calmer editor: a Type | Write switch and a Record button in the header; the pen tools sit in a dock on the page's edge (mirrored for left-handed use, a bottom row on phones) instead of a bar above the text. Switching modes never moves the text under your handwriting.
  • The note list's density (comfortable, compact, grid) moved into the Sort menu. Pinned and Recent left the sidebar; pinned notes head All Notes and both views stay in the command palette.
  • Keyboard hints read ⌘ on Mac and iPad and Ctrl elsewhere.
  • Database schema v5 (additive; upgrades from v2 and v3 are tested). One library module is now the only writer of note data, with optimistic updates and rollback on a failed write.
  • The service worker now precaches the pdf.js worker, so PDF import works offline.
  • Release workflow checks that the tag matches the app version, runs tests, and publishes the changelog section as the release notes.

Fixed

  • Opening a note autosaved it (bumping its modified time and wiping a PDF page's text layer).
  • Ink on page 2 or later was mistaken for orphaned ink and created ghost notes.
  • A note with ink only on a later page looked empty and was never saved; emptying a saved note was not saved.
  • Edits are flushed when the tab is hidden or closed.
  • PDF import failures now show a message.
  • Menus near the right edge of the screen (such as the phone's "You" menu) no longer jump to the left side.

Not carried over from 1.1.0

DOCX/PPTX/DOC/PPT import, the .zip package format (replaced by .tala backups, which can still read old backups but not 1.1.0 packages), editable shape handles, and the Draw popover. Pencil double-tap and squeeze are not available in a browser.
